Private Fair Housing Enforcement
Within two years of the discriminatory conduct, people who believe they have been harmed by housing discrimination may file a civil action in a state or federal court. The cost to file a civil action varies by court, and most state and local courts have a process by which a litigant can request a waiver of court fees if they are unable to pay the filing costs.
If they are within the statue of limitations, a person may choose to file a complaint with an administrative agency or in a state or federal court. There is no exhaustion requirement, so the person may file a complaint in court without first filing an administrative complaint.
