Overview of the Fair Housing Act (cont.)
Many state and local municipalities have passed laws which prohibit housing discrimination because of additional protected characteristics. Active-duty service members and people who live in federally subsidized housing may also have additional protections under other federal laws.
State or local fair housing ordinances across the country prohibit discrimination on a variety of different bases. Some common examples include: military status, source of income (including Housing Choice Vouchers), status as a survivor of domestic violence or sexual assault, personal appearance, education, occupation, marital status, and political affiliation.
