Expanding Awareness of Bias
Awareness of implicit bias (also known as unconscious bias) has been growing. As part of the Kansas City team’s preparation for engagement, one of its initial activities was to convene a training on unconscious bias for team members and partnering stakeholders.
The six-hour bias training was provided by a Kansas-based human resources consultant—the Summers Advisory Group —and covered the following topics:
- Participating in Harvard University’s Implicit Association Test
- Understanding and defining bias generally
- Distinguishing between multiple types of unconscious bias
- Discussion of research studies on unconscious bias
- Discussion of ways to combat unconscious bias
