Focus Trend: Increasing the penalties for contempt of court
A reader sent in a request for information regarding legislation that would increase the contempt threshold for courts, for example increasing the limit from $50 to $100. While there are a myriad of case-type specific contempt maximums, there has been three bills introduced in the last several years to increase the general contempt limits of state courts.
Alabama HB 248 (2012) Increases maximum contempt fine in Circuit Court from $100 to $500. Died in House Judiciary Committee.
Georgia SB 107 (2011) Increases maximum contempt fine in Superior Courts from $500 to $1000. Approved by full Senate 2/17/12. Approved by House Judiciary Committee 3/19/12. Died when legislature adjourned.
Wisconsin SB 383 (2010) Increases maximum contempt fine in Municipal Courts $50 to $200. Signed into law by Governor 5/18/10.
