Within the Case Management System (CMS) ecosystem, Evidence-Exhibit Management supports evidence and exhibit tracking and related management services.
- Provide access to digital evidence and metadata, as appropriate under state law or court rule.
- Enable law enforcement to request and share documents and audio/ video evidence with other agencies and with prosecutors and public defenders through a multi-agency evidence repository; to submit evidence for forensic testing, maintain a chain of custody, and otherwise manage the repository.
- Enable attorneys to manage open discovery by requesting discovery from opposing attorneys or law enforcement, uploading documents and audio/ video evidence, selectively releasing it for limited times to authorized persons, managing requests to and from opposing attorneys, and releasing evidence to the court as an exhibit offered for admission into evidence in a case.
- Track admitted evidence and their location/ chain of custody (check-out/ check-in).
- Enable a trial court to manage appellate court access to digital evidence for cases on appeal.
- Enable a trial court to manage public access to court case exhibits.
- Track court case exhibits offered and admitted into evidence.
- Notify exhibit owners (if appeal taken or not) of the owner’s right to claim evidence within a waiting period before the clerk disposes or destroys evidence.
