Among the many recent innovations in court operations, electronic filing (e-filing) has seen the largest growth. As of December 2024, 36 states, territories, and D.C. have statewide efiling portals for courts of general jurisdiction. However, how each state and each court addresses this differs. A statewide e-filing portal allows an individual to file a document in any trial court in the state without having to go to the individual court’s location or website.
Every year more states expand single-portal access. North Carolina e-filing is available in 49 out of 100 counties (as of December 2024). Maryland’s case management system (MDEC) went statewide in May 2024. West Virginia’s e-filing system went live statewide as of July 15, 2024.
