California: Senate approves bill that requires the Judicial Council to consider the role of gender in court proceedings in developing any training on gender bias

May 17, 2024 --  Since 2006, Gavel to Gavel has tracked state-by-state legislative activity with potential impact on state courts.

New and active legislation includes:

  • California Senate approves bill that requires the Judicial Council to consider the role of gender in court proceedings in developing any training on gender bias, including strategies to counter stereotypes, taking into account inequities in power and their intersection with gender, and meeting the needs of litigants in unique situations of vulnerability;
  • Louisiana House requests a study on the feasibility and practicality of continuing the state's mayor's courts and, separately, approves the continuation of the state's Judicial Structure Task Force; and
  • Michigan law now requires the State Court Administrative Office to analyze trial court costs and revenue sources by May 1, 2026, and use this information to develop a new statewide court debt collection system and new systems to fund courts' capital improvement and operational costs.
